It took me 3 hours to get from the international airport to my booked accommodation.
At 22:00 the train from Hartford to New Haven was almost empty, except a few people who looked tired and eager to reach home. At the same time, there was a sense of patience mixed with tension in the air – everyone was minding their own business but alert about everyone else.
That’s the first impression I got about New Haven in New England, which is very different from my first impression of Seattle on the West Coast. I guess the time of arrival (night vs. day) and the mode of transport I was using (bus and train paid by self vs. shuttle arranged by the conference) played a role in the contrast of these first impressions.
After pushing the 20-kg luggage for about 10min along a highway, I turned right into a very quiet road. I supposed I was as nervous and alert as anyone walking alone at night would be, but I was so focused on pushing that luggage and walking fast that I forgot to feel it. Alas, I reached the address and got the key from the key box using a code I received from the Airbnb host just a few hours prior. It took me a while to figure the lock out. Perhaps it is less predictable than a usual lock so people living in can feel extra safe? Or I am just not used to locks here.
